--A Republican club was organized at Sodus Center Saturday evening with the following officers: President, Aldice W. BROWER; vice-presidents, Prine P. RIGGS, Charles J. ANDREWS, Edward G. POLHAMUS; secretary, John C. POLHAMUS; treasurer, Clark T. BENNETT.

--Monday night James EVANS, one of the crew of an east-bound boat, loaded with lumber, was drowned a short distance east of Clyde. He was sick and in a feeble condition. He had just gone from the stern to the bow of the boat, when the captain heard a splash in the water, and upon going quickly to the spot he found the man had disappeared. Tuesday morning some men under the direction of Undertaker ELLENWOOD commenced dragging for the body. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon it had not been recovered.

--They are in quite a quandary at Clyde in regard to their demoralized lift bridge. There is a strict law in regard to obstructing a highway, which is being done now with the bridge in its elevated position. If they should lower the bridge and leave it down they would be obstructing navigation, and there is a very strict law in regard to that. In the meantime the village trustees have had constructed on each side of the bridge some temporary stairs, to enable pedestrians to cross over while the bridge is up.

The Death of John H. Kalbfleisch - Other Announcements

John H. KALBFLEISCH died yesterday morning at 5:30 o'clock at his residence on Culver Park, near Merriman street, aged 60 years. His last hours were very peaceful, and though he was conscious up to the time of death, he departed as one falling into a restful sleep.
The deceased was born in Flushing, Holland, and after coming to this country, settled in Rochester, in 1847, being then about 19 years of age. His devotion to music quickly established for himself a reputation as a teacher of that art. Many of those who are among the best musicians in the city were his pupils. In 1852 he married Miss Emily ALLEN. He was appointed organist of Valley Lodge, F. and A. M., in 1859, and also of Monroe Commandery when that body was organized. Until his last illness he was organist of all bodies meeting in Masonic Temple, with the exception of Germania Lodge. Besides being a teacher of ability, the deceased composed a number of pieces for piano and organ. Aside from this the name of Mr. KALBFLEISCH is inseparably connected with the history of the musical development of the city as the organizer and director of the Philharmonic Society, the most successful and meritorious organization of the kind the city ever had. Many of its members are still prominent in musical circles here, while the talents of others are recognized elsewhere, and still others have passed over to join that silent majority to whom their former director has now departed.
But not only as a musician will Mr. KALBFLEISCH's memory be preserved; he was prominent in Masonic circles aside from his position as organist. His love of fun and his appreciation of a joke made him universally popular. He always seemed possessed by an enthusiasm for club life. He was a member of Valley Lodge No. 109 F. and A. M., Hamilton Chapter, No. 12, R. A. M., Doric Council No. 19, R. and S. M., Monroe Commandery No. 12 Knights Templar, and of the Abeard Club. It is probable that joint action will be taken on the part of these bodies with reference to the funeral, which, of course, will be under Masonic auspices.
For several years previous to his retirement from active life the deceased was organist at the First Methodist Episcopal Church. For the last six years he had been living in retirement and during the latter part of that period he had been in failing health. On the 23rd of last August his wife died. She had tended him faithfully through his illness and her death undoubtedly hastened the fatal termination of his disease.
The death of Mr. KALBFLEISCH will be universally regretted by all who knew him. He was of a genial disposition and was always ready for a joke. Everyone felt almost in duty bound to have a laugh with him. He possessed a keen appreciation of the humorous and enjoyed a joke at his own expense as much as if not more, than anyone else. Everyone loved him.
The surviving family of the deceased consists of three children, J. Clifford KALBFLEISCH, E. A. KALBFLEISCH and Mrs. George C. TAYLOR, all of this city. The funeral services will be held to-morrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at Christ Church, Rev. Dr. DOTY officiating.

HARRISON, MILLER AND PROTECTION

To The Editor of the Democrat & Chronicle.
Sir; Our public spirited and patriotic townsman H. H. WARNER has recently suspended from his magnificent building on North St. Paul street an immense flag of the stars and stripes design, bearing the words:
"HARRISON, MORTON, MILLER, CRUGER and Protection." This mammoth emblem of American patriotism proudly waves upon a great and rapidly growing thoroughfare, that is fast becoming the great manufacturing center of our beautiful city, and the business men and the thousands of workingmen who are employed in that portion of the city can point with pride and enthusiasm to that glorious American emblem of our American people, and can most truly say:  "Hurrah for the banner of protection, that does protect."  America for Americans.

THE BELKNAP CASE APPEALED

Notice of appeal to the General Term in the case of William F. PECK, a taxpayer, etc., against the City of Rochester, et al., impleaded with George BELKNAP, with the latter excepted as one of the appellants, was yesterday filed with the county clerk by City Attorney ERNST. There was also filed a notice of appeal to the same court in the same case by Richard H. SCHOOLEY, attorney for BELKNAP. The reason for the city's appealing in the face of the mayor's veto was owing to yesterday's being the last day of grace for such a step to be taken. Should the Common Council sustain the mayor's veto the case will be discontinued as far as the city is concerned, otherwise the city attorney will be in a position to take other steps in the suit.
