DEATH OF DR. JONAH BROWN
Another of our early pioneers and one
of the first physicians who ever settled in Rochester has passed away.
Dr. Jonah BROWN died last evening (15 Jan 1879) about nine o’clock after
an illness of some four weeks. He had been feeble for a long time and
having retired from practice and active business, had dropped to a
considerable extent from public notice. He was ninety years of age and
came here from the eastern part of the State in 1813. He married a
sister of Mrs. Abelard REYNOLDS, who died about four years ago. At one
time Dr. BROWN went to Ohio to reside, but not being so well satisfied with
the location he returned to this city, which was ever after wards his home.
Dr. BROWN may justly be called one of the old landmarks of Rochester.
He erected one of the first blocks in this city, it being the old stone
building which stood on the site of the present Young Men’s Catholic
Association building, on West Main street. He was a man of strong
natural vigor, during his prime, and maintained an active career until
within a few years, ___ extreme old age impaired his usefulness and placed
him on the retired list. He leaves a son John S. BROWN of Spencerport,
a daughter, the wife of Dr. G. W. PEER, and three grandchildren, offspring
of the late William WEDDLE, who at present reside in the city of New York.
Dr. BROWN was a shrewd businessman and acquired a handsome competency, which
was provided for, some years ago, in a business like manner characteristic
of the man, to be divided equitably among his next of kin. The funeral
will take place on Saturday at 2 o’clock, as announced in another column.
