ITEMS IN BRIEF
 
J. B. HOWLAND, the well known Erie railway conductor between this city and Corning, has removed to Omaha, Nebraska.
 
The act authorizing the Common Council to raise money for certain purpose was amended in the Senate - relative to power to issue bonds for the construction of a bridge over the Genesee northwardly of the upper falls. The bill now requires the assent of two -thirds of the members of the Council before the bonds can be issued.
 
The ladies engaged in the moral reform movement, have elected the following named officers: President, Mrs. E. A. NELSON; Vice President, __ __; Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. L. C. SMITH; Recording Secretary, __ __; Treasurer, Mrs. B. L. HOVEY. The Association meets in the First Baptist Church on Wednesday next, 21st inst., at half-past 2 o'clock.
 
The schooner Garibaldi, T. H. HAM, master, arrived at noon yesterday at this port from Port Hope, Ontario, loaded with wheat, consigned to Eaton & Upton, Charlotte. This is the first arrival of a sail vessel this spring. The schooner Thomas PARSONS is taking in about 200 tons of pig iron from the blast furnace for Cleveland, Ohio.
 
There was a fine rain last night, and it seems to have taken the chillness from the air felt for the past week or more.
 
The City Hall bell was struck once by hand this morning by some person who had nothing else to do.
 
The sun shines brightly to-day, and the sound of the workman's trowel and hammer is heard wherever one travels throughout our growing and thriving city.
 
Miss Anna D. McMILLEN, teacher in Public School No. 3, was yesterday presented by her scholars with a very handsome fruit knife and two fruit dishes.
 
J. DYER challenges George KNIGHT to dance the sailor's hornpipe on the evening of the 27th inst. for the championship of Rochester.
 
Mr. T. V. JONES and several other members of the present stock company at the Theater are engaged for the new Opera House at Grand Rapids, Mich., to be opened on the 20th inst. Mr. JONES will occupy the position of stage manager, a post for which he is well qualified.
 
The Chronicle is correct in saying that the account of a runaway boy, which it published, will be news to people in this city. The "runaway" ran from Rochester, Ulster Co.
 
The Art Journal, a splendid serial, for April is out. It is published in London and New York, and sold by Dewey. Nothing so splendid in the way of engravings, letter-press and papers on art.
 
The Democrat says:  "John W. GRAVES, the present Assessor of the District, has been conscientious and careful in the discharge of his duties, and is personally popular."
 
Dr. GILKESON has purchased the residence of S. S. PELLETT on Sophia street for $6,750.
 
The Rink is to be a lively place to-night.
Among other attractions there will be a mile race with velocipedes.
 
Mr. MEECH, the proprietor of the Theatre, takes a benefit to-night to close the season. He offers a fine bill, and will be happy to see his friends fill the horse.

SUDDEN DEATH - INQUEST - This morning about 3 o'clock, James P. RYAN, a veteran soldier, aged about 53 years, who resided in an alley in the rear of Teoronto Block, State street, was taken with vomiting and chills. He died at 8 o'clock. Coroner MORRISON is holding an inquest, and the cause of death will be ascertained by a medical examination.

A BUFFALO CHAP ARRESTED

A dispatch was received yesterday from the Superintendent of Police of Buffalo, asking for the arrest of one William WRIGHT, alias J. H. ALLEN, who is wanted in that city to answer the charges of larceny and for stabbing a man. Policeman McLEAN was detailed to hunt up WRIGHT, and with his usual success he soon had him in limbo. The prisoner was handed over to a Buffalo Policeman last evening and he was taken to that city.

ANOTHER BEREAVEMENT - Our townsman W. H. GROOT, has just buried his wife. He received a dispatch last night from Troy stating that his mother, Mrs. Mary GROOT, died in that city yesterday at the age of 78 years. The funeral will take place to-morrow.
