THE COUNTY TREASURY DEFALCATION -
The investigation of the Committee of Supervisors into the affairs of the late Jason BAKER, County Treasurer, have thus far disclosed the absence of $106,000. And the end is not yet. If there is no defect in the board the county may be saved from loss, to the extent that a deficit can be shown. There has doubtless been many thousands abstracted for which there are no figures and the loss of which cannot be made so apparent as to make the ?ail liable.

Mr. SCHOFIELD, the new Treasurer, has purified the office and gives his personal attention to the duties. The public may hope to find his records clean at the end of his term and his books, not only in such a form that they may be understood, but that they may be submitted to the Supervisors for inspection at any time without resort to the courts for mandamus. Mr. SCHOFIELD has a rare chance to make himself a very popular public officer.
