The following story about Civil War wounded who were treated in
Rochester hospitals is from the "Rochester Republican" dated June 16,
1864. The list of soldiers in the original was not alphabetized,
otherwise I made few changes. The letters in the third column indicate
the company, the fourth column is the regiment. Regiments indicated
solely by a number are probably infantry. Except for a couple of noted
cases, all regiments are probably N.Y.
LOCAL MATTERS
WEDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE 8, 1864
The Wounded Men at the Hospitals
The sick and wounded soldiers who arrived here yesterday P.M. were
all safely transferred to the Hospitals in the street cars and hacks. -
The hackmen who were not engaged volunteered to convey the wounded, and
the cartmen generally came forward to convey baggage free.
Of the 375 [note: there are a few less than 375 names in the list]
who came in the train, about 60 went to City Hospital [now called
Rochester General] and the balance to St. Mary's. The latter hospital
will have in a few days still more room for the reception of patients
and they will arrive as fast as there is room for them.
The men are in good spirits. Some have taken furloughs from
Dr.
Backus and have gone home. These men belong to this and neighboring
counties, and but few reside in this city.
Dr. Backus reports that all are doing well and none are in a
critical
condition though a few have serious wounds. Dr. Montgomery extracted a
bullet from a wound last night. The surgeons of the Hospitals are going
over the Wards carefully and will see that each patient receives all the
attention and surgical skill he may require. Friends of the soldiers
residing here or elsewhere may rely upon it that nothing will be omitted
that can conduce to the comfort of the sick and wounded that will secure
a speedy recovery. The soldiers who have been brought here are very
fortunate and appear to understand this.
The following is a list of the men received yesterday with the
regiments to which they belong:

LOCAL PRESS
The Tonawanda Chief mentions a painful accident which occurred on the canal boat J. E. FOSTER, at that place. An
attempt was being made to snub the boat, when the line got a turn around the leg of a young man named Charles THOMPSON,
severing the limb just below the ankle. He was sent to the Buffalo City Hospital.
.......George P. MEAD, aged 28 years, returned home to his uncle's, William B. HAMMOND(?), in this village, the
forepart of last week, from the Army of the West, where he had been serving for a year past in a corps of engineers.
He had been in the hospital and was in poor health, and acted strangely for several days, leading his friends to
think he was deranged. Last Thursday, after dinner, he went out into the fields and was missed till Saturday morning,
when his body was found about six rods north of the house in an advance state of decay. A revolver was found by
his side, with one barrel discharged, the rest being loaded. He had shot himself through the heart in a fit of
insanity. He was a very worthy young man, an excellent mechanic, very temperate, industrious and energetic. His
exposures and indefatigable labor in building bridges and repairing railroads for our armies in the West had evidently
unsettled his mind.
The Syracuse papers notice the death of Dea. Samuel MEAD, an old resident.
A man named RAFFERTY, residing with his family at Niagara, C. W., on Wednesday night last murdered his wife and
two children, and then fled from the scene. At last accounts he had not been taken.
A boy named HANNAN, aged fourteen years, fell into a kettle of boiling brine, at Geddes, on Monday night, and was
scalded so that he died.
A shooting match for $100 a side, took place at Syracuse, between Mr. MAHEW, of Utica, and Mr. KIPP, of Montezuma,
Monday afternoon. MAYHEW killed forty-three, and KIPP forty one, out of fifty birds sprung for each.
Ithaca has been greatly aroused lately, we understand, by disclosures of poisoning. Over a year ago a young lady,
daughter of James HEGGIE, brother of A. HEGGIE, once a resident in Elmira, but now dead, died suddenly under
circumstances that could not be explained.--
Some suspicions were aroused, but these subsided, until not long ago, another daughter, just on the eve of marriage,
was seized with a fatal illness and survived but a short time. The second death in the same family with similar
symptoms, aroused so much comment that the District Attorney was led to investigate the matter, which resulted
in establishing the fact that the daughters were undoubtedly poisoned by arsenic administered by another partly
insane.
