Another Pioneer Gone - Capt. Adonijah
GREEN, whose dangerous illness was noticed in our last issue, expired
yesterday afternoon at the age of 74 years. Capt. G. was one of the pioneers
of Rochester - came here when there were but few cabins where our city stands,
and resided here permanently ever after - a period of more than fifty years.
He was born in Kirktown, Green county, N. Y., and left that place to come here
in 1811. He was among the active young men of that time who settled on this
spot and contributed by their industry and enterprise to build up a large
town. When in the war of 1919 a demonstration was made upon this point by the
British fleet on Lake Ontario, Capt. GREEN was among those who took a musket
and went to the mouth of the river to give the visitors a becoming reception.
He was a hardy man and was ready for just such an emergency.
Capt. G. was
a constable with Col. NEWTON in the town of Brighton in 1817, and has
frequently filled public offices since, always discharging his duties well. He
reared a numerous family of children, and leaves six living, we believe,
besides a numerous flock of grandchildren, some of which have reached adult
age. He was among those who organized the Old Pioneers' Society in 1847, and
has been a member ever since. In all the relations of life he performed his
duty well and died holding the respect of his fellow citizens.
The funeral
of Capt. GREEN will take place on Sunday, at two P. M., from his late
residence, North St. Paul street, and from the Universalist Church at 2:30.
The Old Pioneers will attend.
