BURGLARY AT SILAS O. SMITH'S RESIDENCE - Saturday night about twelve o'clock
a hired man at the residence of Silas O. SMITH on East Avenue, heard an
unusual noise in the house and arose to ascertain the cause of it. At the
foot of a flight of stairs he encountered a man with whom he grappled. The
burglar, for such he was undoubtedly, finding that he was getting the worst
of the tussel, called to "Jack" to come and help him and sure
enough Jack did come from an upper room which he was pillaging, to his
comrades assistance. He threw the rays of a dark lantern in the face of the
hired man and with a well directed blow on the forehead laid him sprawling
on the floor. The burglars then fled the house and getting into a cutter in
the street, effected their escape. They obtained no booty at the residence
of Mr. SMITH. No clue has been obtained to the 'rascals' whereabouts.

UNION MARKER - This institution, of somewhat recent origin, is now very
popular with the public, and largely patronized by those who want meat,
poultry, farmers' produce and many other articles. The stalls are all
taken, and some of them are being fitted up on a scale indicating the
intention of leases to do a large business. Stalls 15 and 16 have been
taken by A. W. DURFEE and fitted up for a general business in poultry,
hams, lard, mutton and farmers' produce generally. Mr. DURFEE has had
experience in the business in which he has engaged, and will no doubt be
successful. He intends to keep the choicest articles only. He has adopted
the plan of attaching a card to turkies and chickens showing the weight
and price, so that customers can save themselves the trouble of enquiring
about what they see. Mr. DURFEE's stalls are near the Mill street entrance
of the market, and will be easily found.
