DIED
On the 29th ult., of a consumption, while on a visit at her brother's in
North Chili, Monroe co., Betsey, wife of Noah DAVIS, of Rochester, formerly
of Paris, Oneida co. The day of her death was the 53d anniversary of her life.
After her espousal to the Lord Jesus (1814) her first exclamation was "The
Lord reigneth, let the earth rejoice," she requested this to be the text
at her funeral. To the glory of God, and the encouragement of his children,
it may be said, that but few have left the world with greater joy and triumph.
For weeks before her death, her prayer was "Come Lord Jesus, come quickly,
into thy hands I commit my spirit to when will the prison doors be opened that
my captured soul may take its joyful flight ? but I will wait God ? time."
In order to test the cause of her willingness to die, she was asked whether
her resignation was not the effect of pain, she replied, "It is desirable
to be free from pain, but if I do not misinterpret my feelings, it is that I
may be with Christ, which is far better." She was told that her departure
was at hand, she exclaimed, "Blessed tidings." She addressed her family
and friends in a most impressive manner, a favorite hymn (599, Vil. Col.) was
several times sung or read to her, which seemed to fill her with joy inexpressible;
even after she was unable to speak, she raised her cold and pulseless arms,
expressing the greatest animation, and soon after fell asleep in the arms of
her beloved. "O Death, where is thy sting?" "Blessed are the
dead who die in the Lord." Will cavilers say this was hypocrisy or enthusiasm?

Dr. PLANTOU, who has publicly for three days, from the 27th to the 30th of
June, exhibited his new mode of constructing and propelling Steamboats by means
of water tight revolving cylinders, armed with paddles, acting as bouyancers
and propellers; and particularly his mode for navigating canals with steam power,
without injuring the banks, (of which practical, as well as scientific men grant
him the real practicability, and agree to the great advantages of his plan over
the present one.) - offers to any man or company his right of patent for two
boats on the Erie canal, as a reward for building them on his plan; which being
of a new and peculiar construction, would be able to accommodate a hundred and
fifty passengers - by having two cabins, one on each side - about seventy feet
long and five feet wide - a cabin at each end of the boat - the middle part
to be occupied by the engineer, the cylinders and the kitchen. One of the cabins
would be for those who would pay something more. This plan, by its superior
accommodation, number of passengers, and expedition of traveling, would bring
a good income to the owners. On this plan, which has the advantages of not creating
a swell in front nor sides of the boat; but of creating a currant under the
boat, which lifts it up. Twelve miles at least would be made in an hour.
Dr. PLANTOU proposes, also, if though more praticable, forming a company
at fifty dollars the stock, of fifty shares. The Doctor has a plan for a steam
engine which cannot burst - would weigh not one third of the present ones -
occupy only one third of the space, and be heated by anthartic coal. Rochester,

MELANCHOLY DEATH - Drowned in the Hudson river, a few miles west of this
village, on the 22d ult., Miss Betsey A. HARVEY, in the 17th year of her
age. The circumstances attending the death of this amiable lady are truly
mournful. We understand from our informant, that the deceased in company
with her sister and two other young ladies, were endeavoring to cross the
river in a small boat -- the boat being rather small and somewhat old, was
accustomed to leak, they thought it the most prudent course to have two of
them set over at a time; the first two landed safe on the opposite shore,
while the second two were setting themselves across, the deceased was
engaged in dipping out the water, which apparently came in quite rapidly,
she, by some means lost her balance and in the act of recovering placed her
foot on one side of the boat, which caused the boat to upset, and both were
precipitated into the river. The one was rescued by her friends on shore, by
means of a pole extended to her relief, while the deceased was carried by
the current down the river some distance, but before timely assistance could
be rendered, the vital spark had taken its flight. The deceased has left a
large circle of near and dear friends to lament her untimely death. --
