Judge ROCHESTER closed a long and
arduous Circuit in this county on Wednesday last. John H. RIBBY was convicted
of manslaughter, in killing his wife, under circumstances of peculiar
atrocity. It appeared upon the trial that RIBBY, having become jealous of his
wife, beat and kicked her in a most barbarous manner. The deceased was in
delicate circumstances, and in about a week after it was proved that her
husband beat her, was taken prematurely ill and died. The wife of RIBBY was
proved to have been a mild, affectionate, uncomplaining victim to the most
bruted cruelty. She made no complaints of ill treatment to her parents, and
just before she died, when her mother pressed her to say whether she had not
been injured, she replied "it is better that you should not know."
RIBBY was sentenced to the State Prison for fourteen years.
Elijah TAYLOR was convicted of grand
larceny, and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment in the State Prison.
Eleazer ATTWOOD was convicted of
aiding the escape of prisoners from the county jail, and sentenced to three
years imprisonment.
We cannot forbear to remark that the
patience, impartiality and ability with which Judge ROCHESTER discharges his
laborious official duties, gives ample evidence of much future usefulness upon
the bench. He applies himself most sedulously to his profession duties, and we
believe him second to none of the Judges appointed under the new constitution.
