CANADIAN SOCIETY OF MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS

BOARD OF ASSISTANTS

The Society is efficiently run by an elected Board of Assistants; officers include the Governor, Deputy Governor, Historian, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Captain, Elder, Surgeon and Members at Large.  Offices are held for three year terms which are "staggered" to ensure an election each year at the Annual Meeting.

The Board meets approximately every three months to conduct Society business.  Over the years we have been fortunate in having very dedicated and hard working individuals whose contributions have enabled the Society to run smoothly.  We have, in addition, several members who have devoted more than 10 years of continual service to the Board.

NEWSLETTER & LIBRARY

Since 1981 the Society has published a newsletter, "Canadian Pilgrim", twice a year.  As well as providing Society news, we pride ourselves in printing genealogical and historical information of interest to our members.  We provide complimentary subscriptions of our newsletter to every Provincial Archives across Canada as well as several genealogical societies.  Subscriptions for non-members are also available.

Our Library is housed in the Canadiana Room of the North York Public Library, Toronto, Ont. and is accessible to the public.  Included in our collection is the complete set of The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2006, plus a complete index for the years 1847-1994.  We are continually adding volumes and are striving to build a strong Mayflower and New England research library. We were extremely fortunate in 2001 to be the recipients of a generous bequest from one of our life long members. This has enabled us to add Barbour's Connecticut Vital Records to our collection as well as the Massachusetts vital records on microfiche.  We have The Mayflower Descendant, vols. 1-34 on microfiche, and most issues of the journal after its resurrection in 1985.   We have all 23 volumes of the "silver" Mayflower Families For Five Generations books, both volumes of the five generation Howland books as well as the "pink" Mayflower Families In Progress (MFIP) books.   All of these are in addition to a wide variety of pertinent New England genealogical and reference books. See elsewhere on this website for a list of the books in our collection.

MEETINGS & MEMBERSHIP

Members meet twice a year, at the Semi-Annual Meeting & Spring Tea in May and the Annual Meeting & Compact Dinner in November.  We have been honoured with the presence of five Governor-Generals at our Compact Dinners and Spring Meetings: in 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2005.

We have a strong and active membership; by May 2008 our numbers had risen from 29 to member #500, with approximately 380 actual members. We look forward to, and anticipate, continued growth in the years ahead.  Since our numbers are spread out across Canada the forming of colonies has not been as swift as we would like however, we have made progress.  Again, it is due to the efforts of some very enthusiastic and hard working individuals who have given life to our colonies.  We presently have active colonies in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and are excited to announce the formation of our Nova Scotia Colony in 2005.
